Job Description

Hardware and Embedded Systems Engineering Internship:

Are You an Aspiring Technical Toy Inventor Looking to Discover New Technical Solutions for Enabling Awesome Play?

Join the LEGO® Group’s Hardware and Embedded Systems Engineering within the Creative Play Lab for a Paid Internship at our Headquarters in Billund, Denmark!

Are you driven by an unquenchable passion for discovering new technical solutions through early-stage ideation, concept development, prototyping and potentially bringing things to the market? If so, you could be one of the talented students joining the Embedded Processing and Connectivity  Team in our Hardware and Embedded Systems Engineering  department this year, where creativity and technology combine!

Start date: February 2027

Length : 5 months (until end of June 2027) with possibilities for summer extension

About us:

Creative Play Lab is an ambitious, future‑focused innovation hub inventing radical new play opportunities and never‑seen‑before experiences for LEGO® fans of today and tomorrow. We grow the boundaries of what play can become, using bold experimentation, advanced technologies, and deep insight into how kids play to imagine meaningful, next‑generation experiences. Our mix of creatives, innovators, researchers, engineers, and technologists rapidly transforms curiosity into tangible concepts, redefining the future of play and ensuring LEGO® play remains at the forefront of creativity and joyful exploration.

As an intern in our Embedded Processing and Connectivity team you’ll join colleagues dedicated to letting loose their creative curiosity and technical excellence to explore new play experiences. You’ll unleash your imagination across a range of technical challenges, collaborating cross-functionally to develop concepts and playable prototypes.

About our Internship:

In Creative Play Lab, we look for interns who bring something genuinely different to our innovation hub, adding fresh cultural insight, creative energy, and new ways of thinking. Your time with us will span advanced development for concept creation, to early-stage productization, and to post-launch support. Every day is different and you’ll learn directly from a world‑class multidisciplinary team as you build your craft, embracing ambiguity as you help pave the way using technical elements for new play experiences.

Meet the Hardware and Embedded Systems Engineering  team:

The Hardware and Embedded Systems Engineering team develops the technologies that bring our physical play experiences to life. We work from early concepts and prototypes through to mass production. The team brings together hardware and embedded software engineering to turn ideas into robust, production-ready solutions. Through hands-on prototyping, iterative design and testing, we explore new possibilities and refine them into products designed to be manufactured at scale.

Internship Eligibility:

To qualify for this internship opportunity, you must meet all of the following criteria:

(1) You are over the age of 18

(2) You will be enrolled in higher education as a ‘student’ for the full duration of the internship period

(3) You are currently due to graduate at some point after the end of the internship period

(4) You will not be requesting a delayed graduation date just to qualify for this internship

(5) This internship will contribute quantitatively towards your course credit

(6) This internship is a compulsory part of your education

(7) You are available to undertake this internship contract starting from the stated start date

(8) You are available to work full time for the full period up until the stated end date

(9) You are able to work on site in Billund, Denmark for this period

We also encourage interns to have experience with at least some of the following:

•Source code revision control systems (git)
•Embedded firmware and microcontrollers
•Lab equipment such as oscilloscopes and multimeters
•Wireless connectivity solutions such as Bluetooth
•Common hardware interfaces such as I2C, SPI, and UART

What we’re looking for:

Curiosity : Our teams thrive on a playful curiosity in all they do. You need to be always asking questions, seeking the reason “why”, digging for answers even when it’s hard and never stop wondering “what if...”

Bravery : Our organization is a huge place full of different people and different perspectives. You need to be comfortable meeting new people every day, speaking up when you disagree, receiving feedback, facing the unknowns of innovation head on and forging yourself a path when things aren’t well defined.

Focus : Our workload and priorities are always changing. You need to be happy shifting priorities fast, focusing on a high priority task one week then focusing on developing your own independent curiosities the next.

Team work: Our best ideas come when we have an amazing rapport with our colleagues and when we collaborate in a respectful and energizing way. You need to be at home bouncing ideas off others and building upon the unique contributions and perspectives of your colleagues to create something bigger and better than the sum of its parts. You also need to be encouraging, supportive and empathetic to the fact that different teammates will have different viewpoints and opinions.

Responsibilities:

We want you to bring all your energy, enthusiasm and experiences to work every day so we can achieve amazing things together while you learn along the way. Some of your typical responsibilities could include...

•Participate in project work, including product development and technology exploration.
•Extend or improve support tools used by colleagues during development.
•Develop prototypes to demonstrate or validate new embedded technologies.
•Investigate bugs in depth and develop reliable ways to reproduce them.
•Help build or extend wireless test harnesses for development validation.

Perks:

•Work with a passionate multi-disciplinary team of like-minded creative engineers where you’ll learn something new every day and build your professional network
•The opportunity to live and work in the global headquarters of the LEGO® Group in Billund, Denmark and explore our state-of-the-art campus
•Be a nerd and be happy about it.

Application:

We welcome international applications for this role however you must be able to work on site in Billund, Denmark for the duration of the internship itself.

We have many internships available in Creative Play Lab, each supporting a different team with their own focus area. Take a moment to review all these opportunities and apply only to those that truly align with your strengths . If you have broad skills, applying to more than one team is acceptable but applying to a large number of teams doesn’t increase your chances of making a successful application and makes it harder for us to understand where you’d shine so please be thoughtful in your approach.

Please ensure your application is completed in English.

Please attach the following items to your application as 3 separate .PDF documents. Applications failing to include at least a CV and cover letter shall not be considered.

•A current CV detailing your education and relevant experiences.
•A portfolio or similar showcasing a more in-depth range of your work. This should include projects that highlight your interests, reflect your passions, and demonstrate your hobbies.
•A bespoke cover letter (no more than 200 words) that tells us what motivates you to apply for this internship and why you think you’re best suited for the placement. If you can do or say something to help your cover letter stand out, then please do it. We encourage you to be original and authentic to who you are.

Come and join us as we discover the future of physical technical play!
